Carly Kuhn: Character Study

  • Bird's Bookstore 6025 Royal Lane #207 Dallas, Texas, 75230 United States (map)

Known for her playful, distinctive line drawings and expressive characters, Carly Kuhn is an artist, illustrator, designer, and now an author! Her debut book of work, Character Study, is an amalgamation of her whimsical observations on everything from fashion shows to café life to pets in the park. Carly will be in conversation with curator, writer, and art enthusiast, Lucia Simek. They'll discuss the creative process, finding personality in illustration, how Carly has transitioned her work from the sketchbook to big name brand collaborations, and more.

This event is specifically special for us because Carly is the artist who drew our logo, bird logomark, and scene illustrations! We are so excited to welcome her into Bird's for the first time.

Following the conversation, Carly will guide us through a 10-minute bird illustration, giving everyone a chance to try their hand at creating a little Bird’s-inspired character of their own. Everyone will have a blank bookmark at their seat to sketch on. No drawing experience necessary!

What’s Included?
Included in the ticket price is a signed copy of Character Study, a blank bookmark, and Carly’s favorite pen to take home with you.

Tickets: $35 (Includes a signed copy, Carly's favorite pen, and bookmark)

About the Author
Carly Kuhn is an artist known for her distinctive line drawings. Her work explores observation, human behavior, and the poetry of everyday life. Born and raised in New York City, Kuhn has an early background in television comedy and improv; she approaches the world with the attentive eye of a lifelong observer—a sensibility that informs both her illustrations and her writing. She has collaborated with cultural institutions and heritage brands including Bergdorf Goodman, Sotheby’s, Tory Burch, Thom Browne, Rosewood Hotels, and American Ballet Theatre.

Working across paper goods, illustration, and design, Kuhn creates pieces that feel intimate yet enduring—often weaving hand-lettering and subtle humor into compositions that reward a closer look. Now based in Michigan with her husband, Danny, their two boys, Oliver and Teddy, and a dog named Lucca, her practice continues to expand thoughtfully, albeit with a bit more joyful chaos than before.
